Mulalley retains carbon neutrality status for ninth consecutive year

We take great pleasure in announcing that Mulalley has successfully upheld its carbon neutral standing for the ninth consecutive year. To mitigate unavoidable residual carbon emissions, Mulalley has lent support to four international projects aimed at reducing global emissions in excess of the company’s own emissions.

Once again, Mulalley has undergone a rigorous and independent evaluation of its carbon emissions, conducted by Carbon Footprint Ltd. We are committed to sustainability and environmental preservation, and addressing climate challenge remains a pressing concern for us. This is demonstrated through our commitment to achieve Net Zero by 2050 for our operational emissions, transitioning to renewable energy to power our head office and construction sites, and working to reduce emissions from employee commuting, our biggest contributor. This aligns with Mulalley’s ISO 14001 and ISO 50001 certifications, our adherence to the ESOS (Energy Savings Opportunity Scheme) and SECR (Streamlined Energy and Carbon Reporting), as well as our dedication to the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).

Over the span of time since our baseline year of 2016, our total carbon emissions have seen a considerable reduction of 57%, down from 2067.03 tonnes to 879.75 tonnes. There has been a 22% decrease since last year, largely down to the switch in electricity contracts, reduction in grey fleet emissions and a reduction in gas consumption since upgrading our boiler system at head office. Our reporting encompasses all business operations within greenhouse gas (GHG) Scopes 1 and 2, along with some elements of scope 3.

The designated projects for carbon offsetting have all received international certification and are in alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, which strive for a more sustainable and improved future for all. Of particular relevance to Mulalley and our core values are goals pertaining to climate action, decent work and economic growth, as well as good health and well-being. This year’s endeavours contribute to Mulalley’s cumulative carbon offset of 12,614.5 tonnes of CO2e over the past nine years. Beyond their local and global environmental advantages, these initiatives also yield social and economic benefits for the communities they impact.

Dr Wendy Buckley, Client Director at Carbon Footprint Ltd. said: “We are delighted to see Mulalley’s Net Zero journey continue, achieving a commendable reduction of 22% this year. Alongside their longstanding commitments to carbon neutrality through supporting vital carbon offsetting programmes across the world they continue to be a leader in construction.”

Peter Sharman, Mulalley Director for Sustainability and Corporate Governance said “We are proud to have maintained our carbon neutral status for the ninth successive year, which demonstrates our commitment to addressing the impact of climate change, making the construction industry - and the world - a more sustainable place. We will continue working to reduce our carbon footprint and overall environmental impact as a company”.

The four chosen carbon offset projects are as follows: (with additional UK and Kenya tree planting also being supported)

‘Guanaré’ Forest Plantations on Degraded Grasslands Under Extensive Grazing in Uruguay:
The main objectives of the project are wood production, land restoration and carbon sequestration through afforestation. All practices follow FSC standard for sustainable forest management, while enhancing biodiversity conservation by increasing the connectivity of forests and generating income and job opportunities for local communities/ rural areas of Uruguay.

Zhangye Improved Grassland Management Project in China:
The project is coordinated by Zhangye Academy of Forestry Sciences, with the aim to restore the local degraded grassland ecosystem by seeding grass and building fence on the degraded grassland, increase carbon sequestration and contribute to local development by introducing sustainable grazing and management of grassland.

199.70 MW Wind Project in Maharashtra by BWDPL in India:
The main purpose of this project activity is to generate clean form of electricity through renewable wind energy source. Bothe Windfarm Development Pvt. Ltd. is the promoter of the proposed project activity. The Project has 40 Wind Turbines of individual capacity 2MW each and 57 Wind Turbines of individual capacity 2.1 MW each in Maharashtra state of India. The total project capacity is 199.7 MW.
The Project activity is expected to supply 372.791 GWh of energy to the NEWNE Grid of India each year. This is expected to result in emission reductions of 364,217 tCO2e per year of operation.

Planting of trees the UK:
This project provides an opportunity to plant trees in the UK, where projects can be chosen. Most often they are donated to schools. Typical species planted include: Hawthorn, Sessile Oak, Hazel, Downy Birch, Guelder Rose, Field Maple, Rowan, English Oak, Blackthorn, Wild Cherry.

Degirmen Weir and Hydroelectric Power Plant:
The Değirmen Weir and Hydroelectric Power Plant project, implemented by Kais Elektrik Üretim A.Ş. in Gümüşhane Province, East Black Sea Region, is a renewable energy initiative designed to harness the power of the Erzurum River. The power plant has an installed capacity of 13.00 MWe, generated by two turbines with a nominal power of 7222.25 kW each.

Planting of trees in Kenya:
In Kenya’s Great Rift Valley there is a large reforestation scheme which has planted 200,000 trees, and rehabilitated 160 hectares of land. This improves the health of the ecosystem, restoring it’s ability to provide ecosystem services like water catchment to local people. It also provides livelihoods for the locals in and around the valley and focuses on empowering women in the community who make up over 50% of the team.
