Oxlow Lane Site Visits

In November and December, Mulalley organized for Elutec Academy Year 12 students to visit our Oxlow Lane site.

Elutec Academy offers an exciting educational experience for young people. Engineering, design, science and technology are some of the disciplines on offer to students aged 14-19 in the East London and Essex areas.

The great British weather did not dampen the spirits of the first group. Fifteen Elutec engineering students along with their teacher were welcomed by our Construction Director George Legg and the site team with a general explanation on the importance of Health and Safety on construction sites, and an introduction on the different roles within a site construction team including the design team; pre-construction: procurement and construction. George explained the necessity to complete the work in a timely fashion, ensuring the smooth running of the project.

Oxlow Lane, like any other construction site can expect to be audited by internal and external inspectors and a constant record of what is happening regarding Health and Safety. For young people interested in pursuing a career in the construction industry, it is important to make them aware that construction is a safe career choice. We also informed the students of the need for considerate construction, ensuring communities and wildlife are not negatively impacted by construction works.

With everyone kitted out in regulatory issued PPE, the students were able to proceed onto the site and witness a busy construction site in action. These students were then set the task of producing a presentation of their visit.

Claire Bannister, Assistant Principal & Head of Science & Engineering said: “The Year 12 Elutec Engineering students visit to the Oxlow Lane housing project.

This opportunity has enabled our students to see some of the wide range of jobs and skills required in the construction industry. The students were able to see how the project is managed and run. The guided tour of parts of the site to see the stages of construction was an excellent opportunity for the students to see how a construction site works. This visit has given them an insight into career opportunities at the end of their studies. A big thank you to Mulalley for taking time to work with Elutec. The students will be working on the project set by the team over the next few weeks and will then present their solutions to the team.

Again, many thanks for the continued partnership with Elutec.”

Mulalley Director George Legg said: “It is always good to speak to young people who are keen in considering taking a career in construction. We wish them all the best with their projects”.

Mulalley is constructing 63 energy efficient dwellings for local people at Oxlow Lane on behalf of our client BeFirst. Completion is expected in December 2023.
